Student Screening Premieres

USH film screens range from community presentations to international stages. Perhaps the most prestigious was our initiation to the Smithsonian National Musicum of the American Indian. In 2016, Carols, Carmen, and Chema traveled to the United States to showcase their films and the films of their students. In addition to film screenings, our students enter films at festivals. Scroll down to see two of the award winners!

In 2015, youth from three Maya Nations participated in the global collaboration between USH, Adobe Youth Voices, and SERES.

Two youth production teams created: “Beautiful Woman” and “Manuel Yojcom Mendoza: Life Without Limits” which premiered at the Ícaro International film festival in Guatemala City.

2016 was a year for USH to celebrate. Three Program Leaders, Carlos Vasquez, Chema Vasquez, and Carmen Tzoc, traveled to the United States to showcase youth-produced films, in New York City and Washington, D.C.

Standing center stage, these leaders facilitated screening discussions, sharing their lived realities and eagerness to continue creating films that bridge past and present. To them, technology (new) is a means to preserve heritage through their eyes.

In New Zealand, USH Founder delivered a keynote address that drew upon the work of youth with whom she worked in Guatemala.

She shared their practices, insights, and visions on defining and leveraging film to reconnect with, revive, and revitalize their cultural knowledge, traditions, and languages in their own vision.

If you have a culture of you must appreciate it and you must practice it you should always carry what inside you.  I would like to advise them [our youth]  that we practice what our grandparents have left us.”

— Chema: Leader 2017

We have our own cultures, our own traditions, and that makes us proud to show something different. We want people to get to know the way we really are… what matters here is togetherness.
